THE STORY BEHIND THE OBJECT.

WHY IT MATTERS

A late-'60s NPC Spectracolor first issue still pretending it's about nudism, wink wink, with Guild Press ads in the back. Guild Press was one of the earliest gay mail-order publishers, and this is the vibe it was building.

OBJECT STORY

Rex No. 1. It’s a male nude magazine that still pretends to be about nudism: the first article is “Nudist Articles: Are They Effective?” Then it drops the act for full-color solo nudes on beds and chairs.

The back pages advertise Guild Press and Rick Sampson’s Friend-to-Friend Club, which puts it around 1968 to 1971. It’s a well-loved copy, toned and creased.
