Mak Aarons is staying in
The singer and adult creator on Amy Winehouse, voice memos, answering his own mail, the house he has to pay for, and why inner peace is the only thing he is chasing right now.
Plate 01Mak Aarons makes records and he makes porn, and he is unusually unbothered about the gap between the two. He writes songs into his phone as voice memos, melody first, and he films himself for a subscription audience that has stayed with him for years. He replies to them himself. He answered our questions in writing.
What is unusual is not the combination. It is how unbothered he is by it. He talks about a bassline and a body in the same register, and when you ask what gets him in the mood he starts with the gym and a house he has to pay for. There is no tortured artist here, and no apology either.
Part One
The camera.
You have a track called Goin’ Out Is Gettin’ Old (Stay In). When you are staying in to film, what gets you in the mood to show off? Do you ever play your own music?
Going to the gym gets me in the mood, as well as pulling up to my house that’s being built and knowing I have to pay for it. Also, sometimes the things I get sent in the mail can be new and arousing.
Plate 02Your gay audience is fixated on your ass. When you are filming, do you think about the guys on the other side of the screen?
I do. I have so many fans who have been subscribed to me for years and I know what they like.
I also go through every single message I get — me, not “chatters” or management. I talk to my people and get a feel for what they want. So I’m always thinking about my fans. And yes, it turns me on.
Plate 03Creators often say that recording vocals and filming adult content take the same kind of vulnerability. Have you ever tracked vocals naked to get at that?
I’ve never done this. Not to say I won’t. Just haven’t … yet. Also, hadn’t thought about doing it till this question.
You have never publicly defined your sexuality, which has only made your gay audience more interested. Does that attention turn you on?
Of course. I’ve crossed that line on my OnlyFans.
There is a craft to playing to a male audience when your own labels are undefined. How much of the way you frame those shots is deliberate?
Everything I do is intentional.
Plate 04If you collaborated with another male creator, what would you want him to do first?
Oil my cheeks up and do whatever it is he wants. He can be creative with it.
I don’t do things I don’t want to do.
On what he is actually chasingPart Two
The music.
When you sit down to work on a track like Questions, do you start with a beat, a melody or a lyric?
It’s honestly always so different. Lately I’ve been just recording voice memos of melodies along with lyrics and ideas into my phone.
I wrote Questions by playing common chords on the piano and kind of improvising a melody over it. It’s usually melody and lyrics, and then I make the production and beat.
Plate 05
Plate 06You set a very particular mood on 10pm and Fall Time Vibes. Who shaped the way you sing and produce?
That’s a tough one. My favorite artist has to be Amy Winehouse. Singing her stuff as a kid was easy and fun for me. I felt her raw vulnerability and unpolished emotion.
I really love so many artists and different types of sounds. When it comes to me, I just make music based on how I’m feeling in the moment, and that’s the beauty of it.
Staying independent takes a lot of drive. What has been the most rewarding part of owning your own sound?
I haven’t put anything out in a while. However, I can say I most likely will stay independent. My next release will be all my own visuals — with the help of other artists, of course.
The most rewarding part are the videos I get of people listening to my songs, or tagging me on IG. Since it’s been a minute I don’t get them as often anymore, but when I do it’s super refreshing and brings a smile to my face. It’s always been who I am.
Between the music and the subscription work, what is the main focus right now?
My main focus is inner peace and mental health. I don’t do things I don’t want to do, and I think it’s important to communicate without being a dick — unless someone is really asking for it.
You can expect growth on my OnlyFans in terms of production, intensity and naughtiness. As for my music, I’ll have more out soon. I have so many songs and I’m always writing. Stay tuned.
