THE STORY BEHIND THE OBJECT.

WHY IT MATTERS

Downtown performance artist John Sex in the interview slot of a skin mag. The East Village club kids crashed Playguy, and it's a gem for anyone who loves '80s New York.

OBJECT STORY

Playguy, February 1985, $3.95. The interview is John Sex, the downtown New York cabaret and club performer. Also inside: "Tea Room Etiquette," "Gender Benders," and fiction titled "Art Makes You Horny" and "Men in Rubber." The cover man is bare-chested, with stubble and a light dusting of chest hair.

The back cover is a Loft ad (New York and Fire Island) for a suede loincloth, "It's a Jungle Out There," $35.00, worn by a hairy, cut torso. A "$3.00" price sticker sits over the barcode. There's scuffing to the masthead and a chip missing from the top corner at the spine on the back cover.
