THE STORY BEHIND THE OBJECT.

WHY IT MATTERS

Right on the back cover, a New York club is renting out VHS and Beta tapes, fronted by filmstar Keith Anthoni. Porn was about to move from the magazine rack to the VCR, and this Playguy, from George Mavety's Modernismo stable, caught it mid-switch.

OBJECT STORY

Playguy Volume 6, Number 11, $3.50, "The Magazine for Men Who Like Things Manly." The cover lines promise nudes ("Latin Lover"), fiction ("Beginner's Luck"), a centerfold billed as "Big Red," and Fantasies.

The cover man is a redhead in a pale blue oxford with a cream sweater knotted over his shoulders. The back cover is a full-page ad for the International Film & Video club on West 47th Street in New York: a mustached, bare-chested man holding a stack of video cassettes, plus an inset of filmstar Keith Anthoni ("Pier Groups," "El Paso Wrecking Corp.," "Tough Guys"). It's from about 1982, and both covers are clean and bright.
