The story

By 1982 Bob Mizer had been shooting naked men in Los Angeles for almost forty years. He outlasted the Post Office, a stretch on a prison farm and every obscenity charge they threw at him, and he built the whole business on the posing strap because the strap was the only thing standing between him and a cell. Desperados is what he got to make once the strap didn't matter anymore. There's no bodybuilding alibi and no art-study excuse, just good-looking guys, a lot of denim and a studio finally showing everything it always wanted to show.

AMG made this one with Le Salon in San Francisco, which distributed it in the States and, through Le Salon International in Amsterdam, all over Europe. If your idea of AMG starts and stops at fifties posing straps, this is the other end of the story, and it's a lot more fun.

Why it matters

Bob Mizer started the Athletic Model Guild in Los Angeles in 1945, back when the posing strap was the price of staying out of jail. By 1982 the strap was long gone, and Desperados is Mizer's studio with nothing left to hide, sixteen pages of full color and not a pouch in sight. Cover man Greg Driller also had the cover of Physique Pictorial 33, AMG's own house magazine.
