About the Index

The Index is our catalog of queer print, from the physique era to today. Every issue, title, studio, photographer and model gets a record of its own, and every record points to the others, so you can follow a man from one magazine to the next, or a studio across the decades.

01

What’s included

Magazines, books and other print made by and for gay men, including issues we’ve never owned. A record is made whether a copy is on our shelves, held in another archive or library, or only listed in a studio’s own catalog.

Each issue gets a catalog number, AD-IDX-0001 and up. A number is never given to anything else, so a citation always leads back to the same record.

02

How names and dates are checked

Names and dates come from the inside pages first: the masthead, the indicia, the copyright line. We only go to outside sources when an issue doesn’t print the information itself.

Every record says where its details came from: the copy in hand, an archive or library holding, a studio catalog, or another source, with a note.

03

What “Verified” means

Verified means the record has been checked against the issue itself. Needs review means the details are our best reading so far and haven’t been confirmed yet. We would rather show you that than pretend to a certainty we don’t have.

04

Corrections

If you know something we don’t, a model’s real name, a missing issue, a date that’s off, tell us. Every record has a Suggest a correction link, or write to admin@thearchivedaddy.com with the catalog number. Corrections are checked before a record changes.

05

How to cite

Every page in the Index has a Cite this page box with the citation already written. For an issue it reads:

Title, vol. X, no. Y (Year). The Archive Daddy Index. Page address. Accessed date.

06

Covers

Some covers are explicit. They stay blurred until you confirm you’re 18 or older, and those records are kept out of search engines.
