THE STORY BEHIND THE OBJECT.
A cover-billed "last interview" with Sal Mineo, who was killed in February 1976, inside In Touch. The Rebel Without a Cause star turns up in a nude magazine, and it's one of the most poignant finds on the shelf.
In Touch Issue 23, "The Magazine for a Different Point of View," at $2.00. The cover lines go from Tennessee Williams and "Sal Mineo: The Last Interview" to Martin Sheen speaking out, Jean Cocteau's sailors for Jean Genet, "3 Big Nude Features!" and "Action in London and Atlanta." The cover man is shirtless and mustached, shot in warm backlight.
The back cover is a full-color Brentwood ad for the 8mm film "Mike Savage and the Woodsman," with Savage in cut-offs and hiking boots on a rocky hilltop. The copy shows honest wear, with creases and rubbing along the spine edge of the front cover.
