The story

By 1980 the Valley was where porn lived, and Love Publishing was turning out Cocksure four times a year from an address on Remmet Avenue in Canoga Park. Calling it "An Action Magazine" was honest advertising. This is Number Five, the Summer 1980 issue, from back when a quarterly could still feel like a private club for men who knew exactly what they were looking for.

The cover lines do most of the flirting on their own. "The Master 'Baiters'" and "Big Boss Men" are the kind of puns you only get from an editor having a very good time, and the whole issue runs on that same energy.

Why it matters

Cocksure was Love Publishing's quarterly out of Canoga Park, in the San Fernando Valley, which by 1980 was already the center of the porn business. Number Five, Summer 1980, catches the scene right before the eighties got glossy, when an action magazine still felt like something you had to know where to find.
