Stanley Stellar started photographing gay New York in 1976, and he shot it from the inside: Christopher Street, the West Village, the abandoned Hudson River piers where men sunbathed and cruised in full view of the city, and the blue wall in his studio where the artists, the friends, the porn stars and the lovers all sat for him. Don’t Worry Boys gathers just over 100 photographs from his archive of 25,000, moving from the late ’70s through the AIDS years. Andrew Holleran calls him “the street’s answer to Robert Mapplethorpe.” The title comes from a New York bar, the Don’t Worry Boys Social Club.
Stellar’s books don’t stay on shelves for long. The Piers sold out, and his 1992 book Stellar Men now sells secondhand for $175 and up. We’re carrying a limited number of copies.
