The story
Gay and Groovy bothers to tell you who these men are. "In the Groove" opens on page 3 with Larry Olson, who went "directly from a rural New Hampshire village to Fort Ord and to Danang" and came back with two faint scars, a few tattoos and a taste for Los Angeles. The photos set the scene in wood paneling and jeans, with shirts coming off over a white desk long before the text gets there.
"Night Ride" on page 31 puts Sonny Scott, two months into his own law practice, behind the wheel on Western Ave. asking a stranger, "Can I give you a lift?" The pictures play it out in slacks in front of a flower painting, the black-and-white pages in between get very close and very hairy, and the yellow back cover closes the door on a bedroom with "Sale to Minors Forbidden."

Why it matters
It is a $6 skin mag with real fiction in it, a Vietnam vet's homecoming and a lawyer's pickup on Western Ave., each staged in full with denim, tattoos and wood-paneled walls.
