Condition report

Fair. A 1967 color pictorial that still pops, with honest scuffs, a shop's handwritten price sticker and some mild water damage, a light water mark on the title page. Every mark is in the photos.

Front: white store sticker with a handwritten "4.00" on the lower right; rubbing and edge wear down the right (spine-side) edge, a few small white chips in the black field and one on the model's thigh near the bottom. Back: small scuffs and surface scratches at the upper right, light edge rubbing. Inside: some mild water damage. The title/copyright page has light tide-mark staining at the top left and faint speckling; the color plates photographed are bright and clean.
The story

DSI was two men in Minneapolis, Lloyd Spinar and Conrad Germain, who started in 1963 selling directories and grew into what one historian calls arguably the largest gay-owned business in the world by 1967. They also took on the federal government. Charged with dozens of obscenity counts over their nude male magazines, they won, and the fight helped open the mail to full-frontal male nudes at a time when the physique world was still hiding behind posing straps.

Männlich, copyright 1967 and marked First Printing, is DSI in that moment, and the title page says so outright: plenty of female nudes are available, the male nude is unjustly neglected, and this magazine is here to fix it. Leather jacket, rope, a cowboy with a rifle, everything out in full color. It reads like a manifesto with pictures.

Why it matters

Printed in 1967, the year DSI won its fight over mailing male nudes, this is early full-frontal male nudity from the gay-owned company that helped make it legal.
