THE STORY BEHIND THE OBJECT.

WHY IT MATTERS

Audrey Hepburn, Alan Bates and Ray Caviano, in the same issue as the nudes. That was George Mavety's Mandate in 1979: celebrity gossip up front, eros in the back, and nobody thought it was weird.

OBJECT STORY

Mandate for May 1979, $2.25, "The International Magazine of Entertainment and Eros." Interviews with Alan Bates, Audrey Hepburn and Ray Caviano, plus the regular Movies, Art, Discs, Nudes, Books and Dance sections.

The cover is pure 1979: a hairy, ripped torso in a cowboy hat and backpack straps, with a hand hooked into open button-fly jeans. The back cover is a full-page PWD ad for RUSH Sensual Body Lubricant and RUSH Liquid Incense. There's a small scuff at the lower-left corner of the front cover, and the rest is bright.
