THE STORY BEHIND THE OBJECT.

WHY IT MATTERS

QQ started as Queen's Quarterly in 1969, the year of Stonewall, and by 1978 it was a New York newsstand staple. Physique shots, personals and lifestyle tips: the gay life of '78 in one tidy package.

OBJECT STORY

QQ, August 1978. A dark-haired hunk in red briefs tied to a pine tree on the cover, and cover lines promising “How to Get Big Size,” leather guys, big musclemen, and a pull-out color centerfold.

QQ started life in 1969 as Queen’s Quarterly, and by ’78 it was a newsstand staple, with 16 pages of personal ads.
